Mmmm Urine! Sarcasm At Its Finest.

Maybe you’ve heard of athletes putting urine on their hands to help make their skin tougher, but athletes drinking urine to help their performance, that’s a new one.

The practice of drinking urine is not new, or limited to a few brave souls of combat sports such as mixed martial arts or boxing. Boxer Juan Manuel Marques explain the benefits he says he gets from drinking his own urine. “It really helps me a lot," he says. "I drink it for the protein and the vitamins. Why not drink it with those things in it rather than waste it.”

And, although the potential benefits and healing capacities of drinking urine have been encouraged for centuries by many cultures, there is no credible medical evidence to support it. “There is no known benefit to it at all,” says athletic trainer Tony Milka with Results Physical Therapy & Training Center in Sacramento. “It’s mostly water, but wasted water the body has already filtered through and decided to get rid of. To take it back in doesn’t make a ton of sense.”

But with athletes sometimes, the power of the mind is all you need.

“It’s all about getting the mental edge. So if that’s what you think helps..so be it,” explained former MMA World Champion Urijah Faber. “I know one guy who does it. I think he’s giving everyone a bad rap!”

He may be right,..because most fighters we spoke with simply wouldn’t do it.

“Drink your own urine? It’s disgusting, totally nasty,” says Lee Davis.

“That’s a bunch of bull,” noted Jeremy Freitag. “If it were good for you, everybody would do it. You know what I mean? It’s wrong. It’s disgusting!”
